Advanced Advocacy

This course is suitable both for the experienced advocate in the Magistrates Court, and the less experienced advocate who wishes to develop confidence in undertaking contested trials

  • How good an advocate are you?
  • How do your prepare for trial?
  • Are you comfortable with cross examination, or do you just muddle through?
  • Even with your experience you may never have used a skills training session
    to assess how good you really are.

The day is spent on a case study:

  • Preparing for trial
  • Using the short Opening Address effectively
  • Examination in chief
  • Cross examination

Each participant will have the opportunity:

  • To practice in all these areas
  • To be assessed by the tutor,and coached as necessary
  • To discuss techniques and ideas with colleagues

Course Objectives

By the end of the session participants will:

  • Be better able to plan and prepare for a trial and understand the importance of doing so
  • Be able to select the most effective strategy and tactics
  • Be able to set and agree realistic outcomes for cross examination
  • Understand and be willing to use different questioning styles to suit the circumstances
  • Have assessed their own capability as trial advocates
  • Understand what may be required to improve in the future
