MAKING A COMPULSORY PURCHASE ORDER – A SURVIVAL GUIDE

A day course for lawyers, estate managers and surveyors who are new to compulsory purchase. The course will give a broad overview of the key aspects of acquiring property by compulsory purchase and will cover:

  • The justification for compulsory purchase
  • The appropriate statutory powers for making a CPO
  • The resolution for the making of the CPO including the officers’ report
  • Planning requirements
  • Obtaining details of interest
  • Service of documents
  • The Statement of Reasons
  • Drafting the CPO and associated documents
  • Objections to the CPO
  • The public local inquiry
  • Confirmation of the CPO
  • Purchase by agreement and giving undertakings
  • Dealing with highways and statutory undertakers
  • Special categories of land

The course will focus on the typical urban site assembly but brief reference will also be made to highways CPOs and orders. The course does not cover compensation.
