This course is intended for those intending to give evidence in the magistrates court in connection with Local Authority Prosecutions

Most officers will feel at least a little apprehensive about giving evidence in court. The perception is that this often arises from the uncertainty over what is expected and a lack of knowledge of the sort of questions that will be asked. The reality is that a little basic training on preparation and a greater understanding of the court process often leads to greater confidence and better performance in court.

Preparation is regarded as the key element of the course. Whilst a badly prepared witness statement is likely to lead to unwelcome challenges at court, a well prepared statement will lead to greater certainty as to what is expected and a more polished performance. Statement taking is therefore a significant part of the course. The preparation aspect will also include preparation for court.

Other key aspects of the course include:

  • Court Structure and procedure
  • Basic rules of evidence
  • Formalities
  • Giving evidence
  • Cross examination
  • Etiquette
  • Difficult questions
  • Use of notebooks

" The most useful course I have attended in a long time" - "The course was very informative, the course material and visual aids were well thought out and easy to follow. As always the venue used was excellent "

Stephen Robshaw, Fenland District Council - Brenda White, London Borough of Lewisham
